I know it is a furnace, what is the thing with the blue tape around it?

ANSWER: Smoke Detector! Taped to the furnace ducting!

This was in the basement of an older house we looked at.
What is it?

ANSWER: It is an old DRYER.
It is hooked up to the furnace, the racks slide in and out and you hang your clothes on them.
